Primary wastewater treatment

Biological treatment alone is not always sufficient for every industrial wastewater application. Industrial wastewater streams often contain a wide variety of impurities that may require multiple physical and chemical treatment steps to achieve safe discharge or enable reuse.

Contaminants such as dissolved solids, suspended matter, and fats, oils, and grease (FOG) often demand specialized technologies to ensure effective treatment. At Global Water & Energy (GWE), we design and deliver customized, turn-key wastewater treatment solutions focused on efficiency and minimal maintenance, tailored to consistently meet your industrial requirements.

We provide advanced primary treatment solutions designed for reliability and performance across a wide range of industries. Technologies such as SUPERFLOT™ and SUPERSEP™ deliver efficient solid-liquid separation, reduce operational costs, extend equipment life, and create a robust foundation for efficient aerobic or anaerobic biological treatment systems.

FAQ

What is primary wastewater treatment?

It is the first treatment step in wastewater treatment. It removes solids, fats, oils and grease before the water goes to biological treatment.

What technologies are available for primary wastewater treatment?

GWE offers two main technologies: SUPERFLOT™ and SUPERSEP™. SUPERFLOT™ is a dissolved gas flotation system, it comes in 2 versions: AIR or GAS. SUPERSEP™ handles solid-liquid separation and comes in a Crossflow lamella-type solids separator and a Downflow lamella separator.

How can fats, oils and grease (FOG) be removed from wastewater?

Fats, oils and grease are removed in a primary treatment step, ahead of biological treatment. Grease traps and gravity separators suit small flows; for industrial wastewater, dissolved air flotation (DAF), often with coagulant dosing, is the standard. Removing FOG protects pumps, membranes and biomass, while recovered fat can be digested for extra biogas.
